Early Pregnancy Scan
This scan is suitable from 6-12 weeks of pregnancy.
Service Description
This scan is suitable from 6-12 weeks of pregnancy. ● Dating: Measures your baby or pregnancy sac to determine how many weeks pregnant you are. ● Pregnancy Location and Number: Confirms the pregnancy is in the correct place and how many babies there are. ● See the Baby’s Heartbeat: It may be possible to visualise the heartbeat, but it is not safe to listen to the heartbeat until later in pregnancy. ● Scan Types: Offers both internal (transvaginal) and over the tummy (transabdominal) scans. ● Images and Report: You will receive black and white scan prints and a scan report. This scan provides crucial information about your early pregnancy. It is best practice to perform a transvaginal (internal) scan for pregnancy under 12 weeks. This will be discussed with you at the appointment and it is up to you whether you wish to consent to the internal scan or not. A transabdominal scan (over the tummy) will also be offered to everyone who books this scan, so please attend with a full bladder if you are able. If you decide to also have the internal scan, you will then be asked to empty your bladder. Please note the toilet is upstairs in the building. Following the scan, you will receive black and white scan prints and a scan report. If there are any concerns with the scan findings, with your consent, we will refer you to the Early Pregnancy Unit within the NHS Trust you have booked your pregnancy.
